BlueTalon Integrates with Microsoft Azure HDInsight to Drive Big Data Adoption in the Cloud
New Product Integration Removes Critical Roadblock to Apache Hadoop Adoption Through Enterprise-grade Security and Data Access Control
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—July 14, 2015—BlueTalon, provider of data security solutions for Hadoop, today announced the integration of the BlueTalon Policy Engine with Azure HDInsight to meet customer demand for big data security and accelerate Hadoop adoption in the cloud.
Hadoop has become one of the most scalable, flexible and economically viable standards in the enterprise for managing large volumes of data. Based on the Hortonworks Data Platform, Azure HDInsight deploys and provisions Hadoop clusters in the cloud, providing a software framework designed to manage, analyze, and report on big data with high reliability and availability. While Hadoop-as-a-Service dramatically simplifies enterprise access to the big data technology, true enterprise-scale adoption has been hindered by Hadoop’s paucity of data entitlement, data security and regulatory compliance solutions.
“More than 42 percent of all data breaches are traced back to inadequate data access and security controls, and this is a huge concern for Hadoop, which was not designed with these issues in mind,” said Eric Tilenius, CEO of BlueTalon. “By working with Microsoft, we are solving a big issue for the Hadoop community, and further establishing Azure HDInsight as a premier cloud platform for running big data projects. Now, enterprise customers can harness the full business value of Hadoop without the risk of sensitive data walking out the door.”
The BlueTalon Policy Engine empowers enterprises with fine-grained data access control and provisioning. Compared to current approaches that either blindly permit full data access or crudely block access entirely, BlueTalon allows for real-time authorization and masking on a row, column and cell level—at run-time for each query—and without any impact on the user experience. BlueTalon is ideally suited for enterprises where users and departments should only be allowed to access data on a need-to-know basis to help secure highly sensitive data.
“To make Azure HDInsight an ideal cloud platform for big data projects, Microsoft continuously seeks out innovative technology and associates that anticipate and meet customers’ demands. BlueTalon is becoming a key data security player in the Hadoop market,” said Tiffany Wissner, Senior Director of Data Platform Marketing at Microsoft. “By integrating the BlueTalon Policy Engine with Azure HDInsight and providing enterprise-grade security, we’re removing critical roadblocks to the adoption of Hadoop in the cloud. Customers can now take full advantage of Hadoop in the cloud via Azure and more easily comply with the regulations specific to their industry.”
The BlueTalon Policy Engine integrates with existing enterprise infrastructures to:
- Safeguard data by managing data access across different Hadoop access methods.
- Provision data access by enabling role and purpose-based data access policies to be customized and managed from a single, easy-to-use graphical user interface.
- Enforce data access rules in real-time to ensure operational security as well as regulatory compliance.
- Audit data access to ensure compliance to industry regulations such as HIPAA and PCI and to strengthen security by enabling suspicious patterns to be quickly spotted before significant data leakage occurs.
