BlueTalon Partners With Cloudera, Delivering Enhanced Data-Centric Security on Hadoop

Dynamic Data Masking, Row-Level Security and Fine-Grained Role- and Attribute-Based Access Control Now Available to Cloudera Customers, Providing Unmatched Big Data Security

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—August 31, 2015—BlueTalon, a leading provider of data-centric security for Hadoop, SQL and big data environments, today announced that Cloudera has certified the BlueTalon Policy Engine to deliver integrated big data security on CDH. Cloudera, a leader in enterprise analytic data management powered by Apache Hadoop™, has certified the BlueTalon Policy Engine 2.0 with Impala or Hive as part of Cloudera Enterprise to meet customers’ demand for further fine-grained data access and control.

Cloudera Enterprise is designed to enable a single, integrated data management solution for better flexibility and scalability of customers’ big data environments. With BlueTalon, enterprises can control and audit what data users can see, use and modify across Hadoop, enterprise SQL datastores and beyond.

“Cloudera has been working closely with our customers to provide them with the most secure and compliant big data solution,” said Tim Stevens, vice president of Business and Corporate Development at Cloudera. “With BlueTalon’s Policy Engine, our customers are able to enhance the native security capabilities within Cloudera Enterprise and leverage additional fine-grained control over their data, including dynamic data masking and row-level security. BlueTalon enables Cloudera customers to harness the full power of Cloudera Enterprise while keeping sensitive data safe and ensuring regulatory compliance.”

“With compromised user accounts now the leading source for data breaches, it’s more important than ever for enterprises to authorize users to access the exact data they need, and not a byte more,” said Eric Tilenius, CEO of BlueTalon. “We are excited to deliver dynamic masking, row-level filtering and attribute-based access – and many other innovations that let companies fully control their data – to the Hadoop ecosystem. BlueTalon’s data-centric security is increasingly being recognized as a key component of enterprise-grade, safe-and-secure big data projects.”

The BlueTalon Policy Engine integrates with Impala and Hive as part of Cloudera Enterprise to:

  • Provide the greatest level of filtering with fine-grained access control at the row, column, cell, or partial cell levels.
  • Dynamically mask data and allow users to utilize sensitive data in queries without revealing it.
  • Provision precise data access by enabling role- and purpose-based data access policies to be authored from a central, easy-to-use graphical user interface.
  • Enforce consistent data access policies across users, applications and data repositories.
  • Audit data access to ensure compliance with industry regulations such as HIPAA and PCI, and to quickly spot anomalous data requests before significant data leakage occurs.

The BlueTalon Policy Engine allows for precise authorization at run-time for each query without impacting the user experience or performance.

BlueTalon will be joining Cloudera at Strata + Hadoop World in New York on September 29 – October 1, 2015. For more information on fine-grained Hadoop data access control or a demonstration of the Cloudera-certified BlueTalon Policy Engine, please email
